Dr. Suzanne Nixon has been working in the field of counseling, psychotherapy and education for a combined thirty years. She graduated with honors from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, VA with a Doctoral Degree in Education and a concentration in counseling and marriage & family therapy. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (VA) and Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (VA) in private practice since 1992.
Prior to her vocation in counseling, Dr. Nixon worked as a special education teacher and counselor in both the public and private schools. She specialized in working with emotionally disturbed youth in level five and six placements. This experience greatly contributed to her skill set in working with adolescent clients and families.
With three degrees in Education, Dr. Nixon is a highly trained and skilled teacher and presenter. She began her professional speaking in the field of behavioral medicine and complementary therapy in the mid 1980’s, speaking at educational institutions and at professional conferences, both regionally and nationally. Additionally, Dr. Nixon has published over 20 articles in consumer magazines and professional publications.
Her approach to counseling is based in several psychological theories, namely humanistic, psychodynamic, mind-body, transpersonal and systems. She is a certified Gestalt Therapist and certified Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapist. Suzanne works with adults, teens, couples and families.
Complementing her traditional educational training in Western psychological theory and approaches to therapeutic care, is her extensive education in the field of complementary & alternative medicine. Suzanne professionally trained in mind-body therapies, energy medicine & healing, touch therapy and meditation. Her keen interest in the connection between mind and body, and how their unified integration contributes to deepened awareness, wellness, healing and positive growth, led her to specialize in mind-body therapy. Her mind-body approach is particularly helpful and healing with individuals experiencing anxiety, high levels of stress, stress related illnesses, depression, and for individuals who struggle with body self esteem, distorted body image, moderate eating disorders, and trauma to the body.
Suzanne embraces a positive philosophy and therapeutic approach in servicing others. With her comprehensive knowledge, diversified therapeutic skill set and healing presence, she helps individuals recognize and build on their strengths, and empowers them towards health. She believes in innate goodness, and the innate wisdom contained within all individuals that makes positive change and healing always possible, and growth inevitable.
